Then head over to Hungerford where there are antique shops a plenty.
Walk back in time
In addition to its spectacular natural beauty, the North Wessex Downs is also home to a large selection of National Trust properties and historic houses, just waiting to be explored. Steeped in history and culture, some of these properties date back as far as the 1500s such as Avebury Manor built on the site of a former priory. Others you may recognise from popular television shows such as Downton Abbey, parts of which were filmed at Basildon Park and Highclere Castle.
Between you and us…
Can you keep a secret? We’ve uncovered some of the area’s hidden gems if you want to head off the beaten track. For guests staying at Littlecote House Hotel, discovering the Orpheus Mosaic is a must. Dating back to Roman times, it’s situated in the hotel grounds. Have you spotted one of the eight chalk white horses on the hillside of Wiltshire? They make impressive photo opportunities.
Haunted North Wessex
If you’re a fan of the supernatural, you may just spot one or two ghosts during your visit. Our Littlecote House Hotel is home to 32 ghosts. Take a trip to Avebury Manor and look up into the south window where you may see the ghost of the former owner, Sir John Stawell. Walk through Savernake Forest and see if you see the ghost of a headless woman, riding on a horse through the forest.
While you’re here…
With so much going on, there’s always an event happening in the North Wessex Downs. If you’re visiting in July, be sure to head to the Marlborough Jazz Festival which plays host to many international jazz artists. Sports fans will not want to miss the Hennessy Gold Cup which takes place in November.
